THE FOUNDATION FOR

HAITIAN DEVELOPMENT

CHANGING COMMUNITIES. TRANSFORMING LIVES.

FHD PROJECTS OVERVIEW

Partnering with community leaders and other institutions, FHD seeks to help develop a successful model of Community Development by addressing both external poverty (community infrastructure, food, water, health, education, etc.) and internal poverty (hopelessness, apathy, timidity, and desperation).

WHERE WE ARE WORKING ➝

WHERE WE ARE WORKING

As an organization, it is our goal to help develop and bring opportunities to the communities of Haiti. Specifically, our first focus area is the small village of Robert Haiti. Robert is located in the southwest of Haiti, about three hours outside of the capital city of Grand’Anse, Jeremie. The needs in this area are great.

PROJECT: ROBERT

As an organization, it is our goal to help develop and bring opportunities to the communities of Haiti. Specifically, our first focus area is the small village of Robert Haiti. Robert is located in the southwest of Haiti, about three hours outside of the capital city of Grand’Anse, Jeremie. The needs in this area are great. People require education, healthcare and employment opportunities.

ASSESSMENT ➝

PHASE l: ASSESSMENT

In February 2012, while on our first official Foundation for Haitian Development (FHD) trip, we hosted a community wide meeting at which approximately 300 individuals from Robert and surrounding villages came out to participate in oral presentation of the FHD. There was discussion based around the difficulties specific to the area, and what we found was that the overwhelming majority of community members in Robert were asking for a School, Clinic, and Agricultural Expertise.

MODEL FOR DEVELOPMENT ➝

PHASE 2: MODEL FOR DEVELOPMENT

Why Road Development in Robert Matters

With much deliberation we have concluded that the most balanced plan of action for meeting the presented needs of Robert is in the development of their roadways. The improvement of roads will allow access to nearby areas for better employment opportunities for both adults of Robert and for the children of the village as they grow, health aid, and the ability to bring construction materials in to build their own health and educational facilities.

IMPLEMENTATION ➝

PHASE 3: IMPLEMENTATION

The deterioration or nonexistence of Robert’s roadway network makes travel by car impossible. By improving the roadway system we will be allowing economic growth and integration of these regions with their surrounding areas. The poor conditions of the road make it difficult for people to receive healthcare, bring construction material to certain regions and for children to access education.

The existing road is dirt and no bridge exists. Travel is tedious. Due to the lack of drainage, the erosion of the roads is extreme. The dirt roads become streams during heavy rainfall. If we desire to begin thinking about bringing materials by way of transportation other than the backs of men, women, and children or donkey, then we must begin to build roads. Therefore, it is our first goal to improve the roadways from Lori to Robert to Dayer. This will include providing a better roadway and bridge to allow access.

We recognize that building a road is not a common project to support. It is neither enchanting, nor emotional, as feeding children, sending youth to school, or saving lives can be, and yet it can still be extremely effective. We are ecstatic about developing roads in Robert. How we see it, road development is sending kids to school, is saving lives, and is feeding people.
